How to Live to 114 in Great Health | Longevity Doctor Alka Patel
We've all heard of the super agers — centenarians living well into their hundreds in the villages of Sardinia, the islands of Okinawa, regions of the world where reaching 100 in great health is almost the norm. Increasingly, longevity scientists believe that kind of lifespan could be within reach for many more of us — if we can fend off the age-related diseases that currently cut lives short. Nearly half of all UK adults already have at least one longstanding health condition. So the question is — how much of that is inevitable, and how much is actually within our control?
takeaways
Dr Alka Patel described her shift away from what she calls 'McDonald's-style medicine' after her own health crisis, and her view that 'health is a verb, not a noun'—something you actively do rather than something you have.
She outlined a 'hierarchy of health' pyramid: foundational health (sleep, movement, nutrition, connection, purpose) at the base, then functional testing and tracking, with peptides, NAD and other interventions at the top only once foundations are in place.
She discussed biological age testing, focusing on inflammation as a hallmark of ageing, and shared an example of a 29-year-old whose biological age tested at 78—largely attributed to stress.
On peptides, GLP-1s like Ozempic and interventions such as rapamycin, she urged 'cautious curiosity', warning against unregulated self-injection and stressing the need for expert monitoring.
She explained cortisol curve testing over a single reading, describing patterns like 'wired but tired' and flattened burnout responses, and using tools like breathwork and vagus nerve stimulators at the right time of day.
She talked about biohacking for women, introducing her idea of 'biosynchrony'—syncing activity with circadian, ultradian, monthly and seasonal cycles—and the challenges of tracking during perimenopause.
